While on tour, Derek Rieth, late percussionist with Pink Martini, experienced a manic episode followed by a debilitating depression which lead to his death by suicide.
Using found footage of Rieth being interviewed in 2007, Derek tells the story of his humble beginnings as a percussionist and how Thomas Lauderdale, formed Pink Martini for a political fundraiser.
Derek was revered for his mastery of Brazilian and Afro-Cuban drumming. Rieth was a founding member of the Lions of Batucada, a Brazilian style marching band with fellow band member and drummer, Brian Davis. Derek shares his passion for Brazilian music and his travels to Brazil where his mentor and surrogate father, Jorge Alabe, world renowned Brazilian percussionist would mentor Derek in music and Candomble.
